Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, could face new charges in the United States over the torture of American citizens in Venezuelan prisons. According to CNN, prosecutors in New York are expected to unseal the charges on Thursday. The investigation involves more than a dozen Americans imprisoned during Maduro's rule.
Some of those released have reported electric shocks, threats, isolation and ill-treatment. The UN has also documented torture practices in Venezuelan prisons. Maduro and Flores were captured during a US operation in January. They are being held in New York and have pleaded not guilty to existing narco-terrorism charges. Meanwhile, Flores' defense will seek house arrest, while Maduro's lawyer disputes the legality of the arrest. The new charges have not yet been officially confirmed.
