British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called for a serious dialogue on the possibilities of changing relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, stressing that maintaining the current situation is not sufficient for the future.
Speaking in the British Parliament, Burnham called for exploring different options for strengthening cooperation with Brussels. The issue is expected to be at the heart of the EU-UK summit, confirmed for November 20, at a time when discussions are increasing about relations between the parties more than a decade after the Brexit referendum.
According to foreign media reports, the British Prime Minister stressed that citizens will have the final say on any significant changes, expressing his belief that public opinion supports a pragmatic approach to relations with the European Union. Burnham's statements signal the British government's willingness to consider new opportunities for cooperation with the EU, while it remains to be seen what concrete proposals will be discussed at the next meeting and how far the negotiations between the two sides will go.
"At any stage, the British people will have the final say and I am confident that public opinion currently supports a pragmatic approach like the one I am proposing," Burnham said.
