Greece is preparing to impose strict restrictions on the use of social media by children under 15.
The draft law presented by the government is expected to be voted on this month, while the measures are expected to enter into force on January 1, 2027.
The rules will affect platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, while Snapchat is being considered for inclusion.
Under the new rules, companies will be forced to verify the age of users and block accounts of children under the specified age limit. For this purpose, authorities will also use the state-owned application "Kids Wallet", which confirms the user's age.
According to data presented by the Greek Ministry of Health, one in four students declares that they use social networks excessively, while one in five experiences nervousness, insecurity or difficulty concentrating when they do not have access to their phone.
The government argues that responsibility for protecting minors should also be passed on to technology companies. Violations could face fines of up to 6 percent of the platforms' global turnover under European rules.
