Adriatik Kupi has resigned from the position of Director General of Prisons, after seven months at the helm of this institution. Kupi himself announced the news through a post on social networks, where he explains the reasons for his departure and the balance of his work during this period.
"After seven months at the helm of the General Directorate of Prisons, I have decided to resign from this position. For me, this was not an easy period, as there were problems that required immediate intervention, difficult decisions that had to be made and responsibilities that could not be postponed even for a minute. I have tried to face them with maximum commitment, always keeping in mind the people and institutions for which I was responsible.
During these months, my work has focused on strengthening security, improving administration and modernizing the penitentiary system. The priorities have been increasing accountability, supporting the professionalism of employees and improving the conditions of treatment of persons serving sentences. I believe that a modern penitentiary system is also measured by the way it treats people, by respecting their rights, by transparency and by the real opportunities it gives them to rehabilitate and return to society. This has been the conviction that has guided me in this task.
There have also been criticisms, objections and stones thrown at this work. I have tried to listen to criticism, even when it has been difficult. In the face of obstacles, we have continued to work. For some other things, time will speak more clearly than I can today. Today I leave with gratitude to all those who worked with me, who shared responsibilities and who stood by this work until the end. I know how much dedication the daily work in this system requires and I appreciate the contribution of each one.
"I thank the Ministry of Justice, especially Minister Mr. Toni Gogu for their trust and cooperation, the leaders and employees of the penitentiary system, as well as all collaborators, for their support and contribution during this period. I leave office with respect for the responsibility entrusted to me and with the desire that the work begun will continue in the service of a safer, fairer and more humane penitentiary system," Kupi writes.
