The Federal Supreme Court of Brazil has approved Albania's request for the extradition of Ervin Mata, wanted for international drug trafficking. The decision was made on September 14, 2026. According to the Brazilian court, the request of the Albanian authorities was complete and met the conditions provided for by domestic legislation. The court also found that the acts for which Mata is wanted by Albanian justice are also considered criminal offenses in Brazil. The statute of limitations, according to the decision, have not expired.
The decision clarifies that the extradition procedure does not determine Mata's guilt or innocence. This will be reviewed by the Albanian justice system during the criminal process. The approval of the extradition is only related to the fulfillment of the legal conditions for his surrender to the Albanian authorities.
