Polish football is currently mourning Oskar Kordus, the 20-year-old footballer who lost his life on Monday in circumstances that were both unfortunate and absurd. The young defender was calmly driving his BMW on the Gostyn ring road, a suburban road with one lane in each direction, when a Volkswagen driven by a 52-year-old man, who was traveling in the opposite direction, hit a deer that was crossing the road. The collision threw the animal like a projectile into the oncoming lane, hitting Kordus' car directly. The deer shattered the BMW's windshield and hit the young man in the face. The footballer's vehicle then went off the road.

The ambulance, which arrived at the scene, found Kordus without any signs of life and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, managing to restore vital functions. But there was nothing that could be done for Oskar: he was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Poznan, but died on Monday evening from his injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen was lucky and remained unharmed. The local prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident, but it seems that it was indeed an accident that was both tragic and inevitable, with no responsibility on the part of either of them.

Kordus had only started last Saturday for Kania Gostyn, his current club in the IV league, the fifth tier of Polish football. It was his seventh game this season, having been transferred in the summer from Korona Piaski, where he had played for two years, always in the same category, and where he had been formed in the youth teams. Born on March 25, 2006, Oskar was a central defender who probably would not reach the brightest stages of European football in the rest of his career, but in the teams where he played, everyone knew that they could count on a reliable player and a teammate willing to sacrifice himself for the other.
Both Kania Gostyn and Korona Piaski have published messages of condolence on social media for Kordus: "With immense sadness and disbelief we learned of the news of the passing of our player, Oskar Kordus. On behalf of the entire Kania Gostyn community, we express our most sincere condolences to Oskar's family, relatives and friends. We share your pain at this extremely difficult moment and our thoughts and hearts are with you. Rest in peace, Oskar," his last club wrote.
