A controversy has erupted in Spain between Real Madrid and the president of the Spanish La Liga, Javier Tebas, after Los Blancos complained about the refereeing in the derby they lost to Atlético Madrid over the weekend. "Pretending that the referees are with Real Madrid means living in another galaxy. This narrative serves as an alibi to mask other shortcomings, obvious to the naked eye in these first matches of the season. It is easier to assume a conspiracy than to explain what happens on the pitch," are the words of Tebas, which were widely echoed in the Spanish media.
Real Madrid's response was not long in coming. The club released an official statement in which, referring to Tebas, it speaks of his "obsession" with the club and describes his recent statements as "serious and incomprehensible, unworthy of a responsible leader". "We believe that the competition urgently needs a leader capable of managing it and fully exploiting its potential, while respecting the fundamental obligation of neutrality", states the Real Madrid statement, which emphasizes that Tebas's attitude "damages the image of Spanish football".
