A second tragic discovery has shaken the historic Plaka district of Athens, as rescue teams discovered the body of another woman under the rubble of a building that suddenly collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. The unfortunate event has led to the death toll of two so far.

Intensive searches by fire services and the EMAK special unit, which began immediately after the building collapsed during renovation works, initially resulted in the discovery of the first body, that of a 20-year-old girl. This victim, according to preliminary information, is believed to be of Albanian origin.

A few hours later, amid hopes that more survivors might be found, a second grim discovery was made. The body of another woman, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed, was pulled from the rubble. Both victims are believed to have been workers at the collapsed building. In addition to the two victims, another person, a man, was injured and taken to hospital for treatment, but fortunately escaped death.

The incident took place on Lysiou Street, in the heart of Plaka, a busy and touristic area. The causes of the collapse are still under investigation by the competent authorities. It is suspected that during the renovation works of the building, there may have been movement or weakening of the structure that led to this serious disaster. The prosecutor's office has ordered a full investigation to determine the circumstances and those responsible for this double tragedy.

The local community is shocked by this incident, while attention now turns to occupational safety measures and the implementation of regulations for construction and renovations, especially in old and historic buildings like those in Plaka.

Blendi Kajsiu: Prime Minister's misunderstanding on anti-corruption

The fact that no institution of our public administration noticed that millions of euros were invested in phantom incinerators, that AKSHI was controlled by an ordinary criminal, that the directors of the Municipality of Tirana awarded tenders to themselves, or that the police director and the director of SHISH worked for Gysi, shows that we do not have a public administration and a state.
