Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced from New York that he will resign on Sunday, September 27, after returning from the UN General Assembly. He said that he will then explain the reasons for his decision to the citizens and join the campaign for the parliamentary elections on October 25 as a citizen. During his stay in the US, Vučić held a series of meetings with international representatives and also announced a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Serbian president also commented on the decision of Nenad Rašić, the leader of the party “For Freedom, Justice and Survival”, to support the Student List in the upcoming elections. Vučić politically linked Rašić to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, while Rašić himself has stated that his party will mobilize supporters to vote for the Student List. The Serbian List also reacted against this stance, accusing Rašić of being close to Kurti. These remain political accusations of the parties and not independent findings. Vučić also stated that Serbia aims to maintain good relations with the countries of the region and spoke about the preparations for Expo 2027 in Belgrade. The announced resignation paves the way for the temporary leadership of the presidency to be taken by the Speaker of the Parliament, Ana Brnabić, while Vučić is expected to immediately engage in the election campaign.
