The Nations League returns this Thursday with an evening full of challenges, where the main attention is paid to the confrontation between the Netherlands and Germany, but at the center of Albanian interest is also the Kosovo-Ireland duel.
Eight matches are scheduled for tonight, with most starting at 8:45 p.m. The clash in Amsterdam has an important peculiarity: the two new coaches, Xavi Hernández and Jürgen Klopp, will debut on the bench of their national teams in a major European match.
Xavi against Klopp, a debut that starts with the "classic"
The Johan Cruyff Arena will be the scene of one of the most interesting matches of the evening. The Netherlands begins a new chapter with Xavi Hernandez, while Germany has entrusted the bench to Jürgen Klopp. For the Spaniard, it is about returning to international football in a new role, this time as coach of the Netherlands. The former Barcelona coach and former Spain midfielder has stated that he is looking for a team with high intensity, initiative and a clear identity in the game.
On the other hand, Klopp begins his adventure with Germany after being appointed in July. The former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund coach begins his job with a difficult transfer and with a historic opponent. Precisely for this reason, the Netherlands-Germany is not just a first match of the Nations League. It is also the first test of two new ideas, with two coaches with different philosophies and experiences seeking to build their teams. Even Klopp himself has chosen to start the confrontation with Xavi with humor, joking about his knowledge of Dutch footballers.
Kosovo hosts Ireland, mission in League B begins
In Pristina, Kosovo faces Ireland in a challenge that takes on special importance for the start of the campaign in League B, Group 3. “Fadil Vokrri” is expected to be full, with the match starting at 20:45. The Irish Federation confirms that this is the first competitive match between Kosovo and Ireland.
Ireland come to Pristina on the back of a four-match unbeaten run in the Nations League, looking to continue that streak. Kosovo, on the other hand, will be looking to use their home field advantage to take the first points in a group that also includes Austria and Israel.
The clash in Pristina also has an interesting element on the bench: Irish coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has admitted that the attention before the match has partly shifted to his statements of recent days, emphasizing that the focus should return to the challenge with Kosovo.
Portugal begins title defense
In League A, Portugal hosts Wales, in another of the evening's challenges.
The Portuguese enter this edition as the reigning Nations League champions and are looking for a positive start. They will face Wales, in a match that could immediately set the pace in Group A4. In the same group, Norway hosts Denmark, completing a strong Nordic evening.
Serbia-Greece, the next match of Group A2
In Group A2, alongside the Netherlands-Germany, Serbia-Greece is also played. This will be another important match in a group where the Netherlands and Germany are expected to attract most of the attention. The other two teams will look to start with a positive result to avoid losing ground in the first week.
Austria and Israel, another clash in Kosovo's group
In Group B3, which also includes Kosovo, Austria-Israel is also played. Thus, after the completion of the first two matches of the group, we will have a first overview of the standings and objectives of the four teams.
