A Peruvian citizen named Hitler Mussolini was elected mayor of a small Andean district in Peru after narrowly winning local elections on a left-wing party list.
Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores, 45, won the race for mayor of Queropalca running for the center-left party "Ahora Nación".
He received 229 votes (34.5%) out of 663 valid votes, narrowly defeating his main opponent, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of the Popular Renewal of Peru party, who received 204 votes, or 30.8%.
The district has an estimated population of around 730 inhabitants, according to official data from 2024. Simeón Flores also manages the Simeon Sac a Pillco Marca investment group in the same department.
The process was part of regional and municipal elections held across Peru following the presidential victory of leading right-wing politician Keiko Sofía Fujimori.
This is not the first time a Hitler has won the support of voters in the South American country. Hitler Alba, a member of the center-right party "We Are Peru", was mayor of another small Andean town, Yungar, between 2011 and 2014.
Alba, who called himself “the good Hitler,” campaigned with the slogans “Hitler returns” and “Hitler with the people.” He explained at the time that his father was unaware of the Nazi German dictator’s legacy when he gave him that name.
Congressman and surgeon Hitler Saavedra served in the Peruvian Congress as a member of the organization "We Are Peru" from 2021 until his death in 2024 at the age of 46.
In Peru, it is not uncommon for parents to choose historical or unusual names for their children, despite their negative or controversial connotations. ©LAPSI.al
