Cilia Flores, the wife of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, is suffering from heart problems while in custody in the United States and has requested to be placed under house arrest to receive medical treatment. Media reports say her defense has argued that the conditions of her detention do not allow her to receive the necessary medical care.
According to Maduro's son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, Flores has a serious heart problem, and the family has also expressed concern about her respiratory condition. Flores' lawyer has requested that she be transferred to house arrest, with 24-hour surveillance, electronic monitoring and the confiscation of her passport.
Flores is being held in a federal prison in Brooklyn, where she is being held alongside her husband. Both face charges in the US related to cocaine trafficking, charges they have denied.
Flores' defense has argued that her health condition requires more appropriate treatment outside of detention facilities, while US authorities have opposed the request for her temporary release, citing the risk of flight and danger to the public.
