Greece plans to repopulate inhabited areas along the border with Albania to combat the phenomenon of population reduction with a financial package of up to 10,000 euros per family and a 50% down payment.
According to Greek media , a key part of this plan are the municipalities of Suli and Filati in Thesprot, as well as those of Pogoni and Konica near Ioannina, which have historically been populated by Chams, who were massively expelled to Albania after World War II.
Because these areas fall into isolated mountainous areas that were abandoned over the years, the project also foresees direct investments in infrastructure, including the opening of kindergartens, schools, and health clinics.
The program aims to alleviate the influx of people to metropolises and create new opportunities in abandoned areas. Applications begin in October.
The beneficiary is anyone living and working with regular documents in Greece, including digital nomads, as the requirement for a pre-employment contract has been removed.
In addition to the border strip with Albania, the project also includes other regions along the borders with North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
The initial plan began with the repopulation of the remote island of Kastellorizo, where Athens aims to strengthen its sovereign claims and secure vital maritime economic zones in the Eastern Mediterranean amid tensions with Turkey, guaranteeing a continuous civilian and military presence. /Tv Klan
