Al Nassr made their debut today in the AFC Champions League Elite, whose format has recently been revamped, resembling a new version of the equivalent European competition: there is a first phase with two giant groups of 16 teams each, corresponding to the two macro-regions (East and West) of the Asian continent. Each team plays 8 matches (4 home and 4 away) against 8 different opponents from its region. The top eight teams in each group qualify for the knockout stage, i.e. the round of 16, which is played on a home-and-away basis.

Al Ain dominated on their home field, taking the lead in the 25th minute of the first half and then deepening the lead in the second half, until the final score was 4-0 without appeal. Ronaldo had appeared irritated before the starting whistle, when the opposing fans mocked him with the classic chorus in honor of the "enemy" Messi (still a candidate for the Ballon d'Or, unlike Cristiano), receiving sarcastic applause from the Portuguese in return.

But worse was some unsportsmanlike behavior from Ronaldo. On one occasion, while launching a counterattack, he lost his balance without seeming to be touched and crashed until he sank into the penalty area, later protesting the alleged foul.

At another moment, he faced an opponent who blocked his run and found no better solution than to slam him to the ground with a move more similar to freestyle wrestling than football.

Social media is full of comments calling for Ronaldo to retire, but it's best for those who hate him to make peace with themselves: before he reaches the fateful 1,000 career goals, it's out of the question.
