The Durrës Court has decided to replace the security measure from "prison arrest" with "house arrest" for the former director of the Albanian Post branch in Durrës Elisabeta Mataj.
Mataj had been in custody since July, under investigation for suspicions of embezzling around 69 million new lek, funds intended for pensions at the Post Office branches in Shijak and Krujë. According to information for the new decision, the court has assessed that at this stage of the investigation there is not sufficient evidence to continue the more severe measure of personal security.
The change in the measure does not mean the end of the investigation or the declaration of innocence of the investigated person. Criminal liability will be determined at the end of the judicial process. Elisabeta Mataj is one of three Durrës Post Office officials involved in the investigation. In July, former finance chief Valbona Duni and treasurer Paola Dana were initially placed under “house arrest.” Investigations into the missing 69 million lek continue.
