Today marks the 29th anniversary of the Student Movement protests, which are considered one of the greatest historical turning points for Kosovo.
At that time, Slobodan Milosevic's regime had imposed violent measures against Albanians and expelled students and professors from the University, imposing a Serbian curriculum for teaching.

The peaceful student protest on October 1, 1997, led by the now-deceased rector, Ejup Statovci, Bujar Dugolli, Albin Kurti, Driton Lajçi and Muhamet Mavraj, was violently dispersed.
Serbian police used violence against students and professors to disperse the protest. There were arrests and injuries among the protesters.

The local and international media have given this event great coverage, almost more than any other political development in Kosovo that had occurred in the pre-protest period.
The event is considered one of the most important of the Student Movement and it influenced the international factorization of the Kosovo issue.
