Bad weather has caused numerous problems in Crete overnight, with the situation most severe in the eastern part of the island.
The biggest problems were recorded in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Ierapetra area, especially in Ferma and Makry Gialos, where heavy rainfall caused flooding.
Firefighters responded to several incidents, rescuing 23 people from homes and vehicles. Meanwhile, services received dozens of calls for water pumping, as the rains caused flooding in homes and businesses.
Problems were also reported in Flamouriana, in the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, where the waters carried large amounts of debris, which ended up on the roads and obstructed traffic. Teams on the ground are working to clear the roads and remove the materials brought by the waters.
In Zoniana and the mountainous area of Mylopotamos, the situation has improved after the problems caused by the rainfall of recent days. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
According to the Greek National Meteorological Service, the emergency bulletin for dangerous weather remains in effect. Heavy rainfall and storms are expected in Crete on Saturday, with the phenomena gradually weakening overnight.
Another wave of heavy rainfall is expected to hit Crete until Sunday, with the phenomena being particularly intense in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the island.
In parallel, in the Dodecanese, mainly in the southern parts, an orange warning has been issued for rainfall and storms from Saturday noon to Sunday noon.
Very strong northeasterly winds are also expected in the Aegean, locally with an intensity of 8 to 9 Beaufort, while wind speeds could reach up to about 90 km/h.
