The situation became tense on Monday night in Pristina, where Kosovo Police used tear gas to disperse protesters who had surrounded the Parliament and to create opportunities for MPs to leave. There were also reports of injuries.
Protesters had blocked the exits from the Parliament and demanded that MPs approve the amendments to the Law on Specialized Chambers in a second reading, as the draft law had previously been approved in principle.
The political clash is also related to the election of the president of Kosovo. Talks between Prime Minister Albin Kurti and PDK leader Bedri Hamza did not result in an agreement on voting on the law. PDK claims that the vote is conditional on the election of the president.
Meanwhile, Vetëvendosje MPs left the Parliament after police intervention, while PDK MPs continued to remain in the building. The deadline for electing the president is October 6.
