FIFA disciplinary proceedings: in addition to the Spain-Argentina brawl, political banners also under investigation

FIFA disciplinary proceedings: in addition to the Spain-Argentina brawl,

It's official: FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings following incidents that occurred during the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The investigation focuses on the massive brawl that broke out after the match, won by Spain and Luis de la Fuente. The disciplinary documents include five representatives from Argentina and one from Spain: Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, Roberto Ayala and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, known as Gavi.

The proceedings were long overdue and FIFA had announced that it would carefully analyze the events of the final on July 19. According to the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the persons involved are given the right to present their defense before the Disciplinary Committee makes a final decision.

FIFA is investigating not only the brawl, but also the behavior throughout the World Cup

It is too early to predict punishments, but the documents reveal two important elements. First, the charges against the Argentine players are significantly more serious than those against Gavi. Second, FIFA is not only investigating the incidents in the final, but also other conduct throughout the tournament.

Falklands banner could cost Argentine FA dearly

The statement mentions possible violations of Article 13, paragraph 2, point c (use of a sporting event for unsporting manifestations), Article 14 (inappropriate conduct), Article 15 (racist discrimination and aggression) and Article 17 (order and security). This indicates that FIFA is also investigating the Falkland Islands banner episode, which caused great controversy during the World Cup. For this reason, the Argentine Federation risks collective sanctions, as it is considered responsible for the lack of proper control of players, staff and fans.

Paredes is the most at risk

In relation to the incidents at the final, FIFA has opened proceedings for a breach of Article 14, paragraph 1, point i (aggression). Nahuel Molina is accused of two episodes of aggression, one committed and one attempted. Leandro Paredes faces three charges of aggression, being the player most exposed to sanctions. Also on the list is Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina's technical staff, with one charge of aggression.

Gavi is also on the list.

FIFA has also opened proceedings for violations of Article 14, paragraph 1, point b (unsporting conduct) against Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Gavi. Unlike the Argentines, the Spanish midfielder is accused of only one episode of unsporting conduct. This difference shows that the risk of punishment is much greater for the Argentine players. If the accusations of aggression are proven, the suspensions could reach up to 24 months, especially for Leandro Paredes, who must answer for three different charges.

Blendi Kajsiu: Prime Minister's misunderstanding on anti-corruption

The fact that no institution of our public administration noticed that millions of euros were invested in phantom incinerators, that AKSHI was controlled by an ordinary criminal, that the directors of the Municipality of Tirana awarded tenders to themselves, or that the police director and the director of SHISH worked for Gysi, shows that we do not have a public administration and a state.
