A group of 14 US senators from both major parties have urged President Donald Trump to withdraw his invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit to be held in Miami.
In a letter to Trump, the senators argue that Putin's participation in the summit would lend legitimacy to Russia's war against Ukraine.
They stressed that Putin bears responsibility for launching the large-scale invasion of Ukraine and expressed concern about his participation in an international meeting while Russia continues attacks on Ukrainian civilians.
According to the senators, allowing Putin to attend the summit under these circumstances raises "serious concerns."
The letter was led by the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Roger Wicker, a Republican, and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The document has been signed by Republican and Democratic senators, making this a common position of both parties in the Senate.
