The years-long Manchester City scandal has reached a turning point. An independent panel has found the club liable for 114 of the 115 breaches the Premier League has accused them of. These are added to 35 charges relating to cooperation with the Premier League investigation. City has always denied the allegations.
One of the focal points of the proceedings relates precisely to the nature of certain commercial income and sponsorships linked to Abu Dhabi. The sporting authorities have sought to determine whether certain income was correctly presented in the club's balance sheets and whether certain payments to directors and coaches were declared in their entirety.
Why the decision comes after so long and what Manchester City risks
The proceedings have been particularly complex. The hearing before the independent commission lasted several weeks and required the examination of a large amount of documents relating to almost a decade of the club's activity. The sheer number of charges made it necessary to assess each point of the charge separately.
The decision, moreover, was taken in a confidential procedure and the full decision has not been made public. For this reason, at least for now, many details of the committee's reasoning remain to be learned. The club itself has also emphasized that the procedure is still ongoing and that some elements need to be finalized.
This is the part of the case that could have the most significant consequences. The sanction has not yet been determined and, under Premier League rules, the commission can assess several options: fines, points deductions and, in the most extreme cases, even expulsion from the competition. There is no automatic punishment linked to a certain number of violations.
