Sometime in late May, as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was nearly four and a half years old and the summer fighting season was entering its most intense phase, Ukrainian commanders quietly ordered some of their most combat-experienced units to deploy about 50 kilometers north of the city of Sloviansk, in the Donetsk region.
The units, mainly from the Ukrainian Third Army Corps, faced off on a 1,100-kilometer-long front line where the Russian 20th Army was slowly advancing westward, starting from a key bridgehead on the west bank of the Zherebets River, between villages, farmland, and hills.
Russia's aim was to cut off supply lines to Ukrainian forces in Sloviansk, one of the two main cities under Ukrainian control in the Donetsk region. During the summer months, Ukrainian forces fought north from the city of Liman, while simultaneously making progress south towards the villages of Rydkodub, Katerinivka and Nove.
This effort, according to open-source researchers, experts who have traveled to the battlefield, and Ukrainian and Russian war bloggers, is heading for a remarkable success for Ukrainian forces: A large part of the Russian forces in the area have been pushed back to the Zherebets River, while small groups of soldiers are surrounded and likely to be captured or killed in the coming days.
According to estimates, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest changes on the battlefield in recent months, perhaps even a year.

For now, this success relieves some of the pressure on the Ukrainian defense, which is struggling to hold the front line in cities, towns and roads that stretch from north to south and include Sloviansk and the city of Kramatorsk, an area known as the "agglomeration."
Moreover, the nearly four-month offensive took place in an unusual informational darkness, as almost no information reached war bloggers on Telegram in Ukraine or Russia until the last few days.
"The Ukrainians regained some territory. Russia lost more territory," Konrad Muzyka, a Poland-based military expert who has spent a lot of time on the front lines in Ukraine, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
"It's important, not because of what's happening around Loman, but because I think it thwarted a major Russian plan that aimed to surround the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration from the north and south."
This is a priority for Putin and the Kremlin. Russia has vowed to forcibly occupy all of Donbas if Ukraine refuses to hand over the territory it still controls, a demand that Kiev has rejected. The issue of territorial control in Donbas is one of the main obstacles to the US-led peace efforts. However, 2026 has been relatively stable for Ukrainian troops on the front lines. In some areas, Kiev has regained more territory than Russia has gained.
The success of the counteroffensive in Liman also highlights the fighting skills of some of Ukraine's best units, including the Third Army Corps, as well as some of Russia's ongoing problems on the battlefield, particularly as it sends young volunteers to the front, who have undergone minimal training.
"I think this shows that the Russians can [only] focus on one main sector at a time, which is currently in southern Donetsk. This occasionally creates some weaker points elsewhere, which can be exploited," Massicot said.
“I have the impression that the 20th Combined Army was not the strongest and so it might have been a good point [for Ukraine] to push forward,” she said.
“Ukraine has now effectively eliminated the threat of encircling [Liman] and is threatening the exit of Russian forces north of the city,” said the Black Bird Group, a research organization based in Finland.
"The 2026 Russian summer campaign can be considered a failure," said Emil Kastehelmi, co-founder of the organization./REL
