Price growth slowed in September, to 2.9% from 3.2% in August 2026, driven by falling prices for clothing and communication services.
This is the fourth consecutive month that the inflation rate has exceeded the Bank of Albania's target of 3%.
According to INSTA, the annual price increase in September was mainly influenced by the "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" group with +0.96 percentage points, followed by the "Transport" group with +0.81 percentage points.
Also, prices of the group "Rent, water, electricity, gas and other fuels" affected by +0.54 percentage points, prices of the group "Furniture, household equipment and home maintenance" by +0.16 percentage points, prices of the groups "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco", "Entertainment, sports and culture" and "Restaurants and accommodation services" by +0.12 percentage points each, prices of the group "Personal care and various goods and services" by +0.08 percentage points, prices of the group "Insurance and financial services" by +0.07 percentage points, prices of the group "Health" by +0.06 percentage points and prices of the group "Educational services" by +0.04 percentage points.
On the other hand, prices in the "Clothing and footwear" group affected by -0.12 percentage points and prices in the "Information and communication" group by -0.04 percentage points.
However, the Bank, which has as its main objective the maintenance of price stability and administers this objective through the base interest rate, kept the base rate unchanged at 2.5% in its last meeting yesterday. However, the bank warned that it is likely to increase rates in the future.
"The increase in inflation in July-August was somewhat faster than our expectations. From the perspective of the basket structure, the increase in inflation was influenced by the increase in fuel and unprocessed food prices. On the other hand, inflation in service items and rents decreased. In macroeconomic terms, the inflation performance reflected the increase in foreign pressures.
In particular, the rapid increase in prices of basic products in the markets and the increase in inflation in our trading partners failed to be fully offset by the dampening effect of the exchange rate appreciation, resulting in increased imported inflation.
