Italy undoubtedly won a convincing and important morale-boosting victory against Turkey, but coach Montella's team had a lot of credit for it. A disastrous first half for the home team, heavily affected by injuries, cost the players and the coach boos and protests, while through the fans' choruses he was even asked to resign. A hypothesis that was also mentioned in the classic confrontation with the media after the Nations League match, when Montella decided with great determination to answer all the questions, even the most "poisonous", despite the translator's filter, which tried to avoid him.
But why should Vincenzo Montella resign?
One of the journalists present at the conference tried to refute the coach's excuses, who after the 1-4 defeat to the Azzurri highlighted the economic difference in the value of the two teams (800 million versus 400), also pointing out Turkey's journey to League A of the Nations League. The journalist was very harsh, emphasizing first of all the real situation of the Italian national team before this match, in a major crisis and after the absence from the World Cup after the elimination by Bosnia, which has a value of 150 million euros. How does it stand then? How to justify the "non-existent" first half of the Turks? Given that the fans have demanded Vincenzo's resignation, the president either does not seem to want to hear this, or perhaps expects the coach himself to "fall back into League C?".
A question that seemed more like a provocation and that met with resistance from the translator: "This question has already been answered before, sir. Let's move on to another question. If there are others, order. Another question". However, Montella, who had apparently understood something from the question, decided to answer it anyway and confront him directly.
The coach of the Turkish national team has no desire to resign and blindly believes in the project he has started, despite the last World Cup without particular pleasures and this launch of the Nations League: "I absolutely do not think about resigning! I believe in work. I did not do this when there were important opportunities and I did not leave the job halfway. I feel the support of the boys and the boys will absolutely have my support until the end. According to the way I am used to doing my job, the things I have to say I prefer to say to the boys there, so that we can improve, of course. So, if you think in general that this team deserves much more than what it has done so far, and let's leave aside the first half of today, if there is someone to blame, blame me without a problem. But the boys certainly do not deserve the excessive criticism, as has somehow happened."
It cannot be said, of course, that Vincenzo Montella does not face responsibilities and this must be acknowledged; then football is like this: in the past the coach was an idol, today is the time for criticism. Criticism that is very strong, especially because it comes after what was seen precisely in the world competition. The first to end up at the center of criticism was the president of the Federation, Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, who was forced to leave the stadium for security reasons. Both his and Montella's resignations were strongly demanded, for a real reformation. There are no excuses for the absence of Yildiz and Calhanoglu (and not only), for a team that until the World Cup had taught everyone well.
