The tragic death of 16-year-old Albanian Asllan Gjana on a football pitch in Thasos has prompted immediate action in Greece. The municipality of Kavala has ordered the indefinite closure of football pitches under its administration, pending the completion of safety checks. The young man, known as “Ani”, lost his life during a football match. While chasing the ball out of bounds, he hit the back of his head on a wall near the stands. The impact was fatal.
Following the incident, authorities suspended permits for matches and training, including children's sports activities. Inspections will focus on the dimensions of the fields and the distances between the playing lines and walls or other dangerous obstacles. The fields will only be reopened after the completion of the necessary checks and interventions.
